Ballad of John Thorpe

See John Thorpe in all his glory
Stout and lusty man is he
The hero of his every story
For whom a ballad or a glee?

Listen to him blow and bluster
Of trunk and lamps and iron rig
Of leather seats and silver lustre
His curricle hung, one horse gig

See him dance with lovely Catherine
Upon her he would press his suit
He plays a game which he must win
Or he becomes a verbal brute

Isabella has lost out with James
Young Catherine has he given up
To the general makes he wicked claims
That show the truth of his make-up
